DIY Fabric Bats with NECCHI
A quick and spooky Halloween sewing project you’ll love!
Looking for a fun, beginner-friendly Halloween craft that lets you show off your sewing skills? These DIY fabric bats are the perfect mix of cute and spooky — plus, they’re a great scrap-busting project! Use them to create a festive bat garland, hang them from branches, or scatter them around your home for a cozy haunted look.
And the best part? You can make them easily using the NECCHI NC-59QD Computerized Sewing Machine, a powerful, versatile machine that makes every stitch precise and beautiful.
Materials You’ll Need
- Main fabric for your bat (cotton or felt work beautifully!)
- Flexi Foam or interfacing (We used KimberBell Flexi Foam) — gives your bats that perfect 3D shape. Fusible fleece also works great!
- Poly stuffing or batting scraps
- Fabric pen or pencil
- Iron and ironing board
- Sewing machine — we used the NECCHI NC-59QD
Prep Your Pieces
Download our free bat template here ➜
Print and cut your template, then layer your materials in this order:
Fabric pieces right-sides together + Flexi Foam on the top or bottom
Trace your bat outline onto the Flexi Foam, leaving a 1–2” opening along one of the wings for turning later. (Tip: positioning your opening on the wing makes it easier to stuff the body later!)
Sew, Trim and Turn
Sew along your traced line, leaving your opening unstitched.
Trim the excess fabric using pinking shears or scissors. Trimming close to the edge will keep your bat shape from having extra bulk.
Turn your bat right side out and press it flat with your iron.
Adding Details
Here’s where the magic happens! Using a fabric pen, draw your wing and body lines.
Then, topstitch along your wing and body markings only on the wing that does not have the opening. We need to leave access to fill our bats body.
If you are not filling your bat, you can top stitch all your drawn lines.
To give your stitches extra pop, try a triple straight stitch and use a contrasting thread color. The NECCHI NC-59QD makes this easy — simply turn the wheel to select your stitch and adjust the width or length as needed.
Bring Your Bat to Life
Stuff your bat’s body with polyfill or batting scraps. This adds the perfect 3D touch — and it’s a great way to recycle leftover materials from previous projects!
Clip the opening so everything stays neat and secure.
Topstitch the remaining wing lines and close your opening. Don’t forget to add your decorative stitches for extra pop!
With the final topstitch in place and the opening neatly closed, your fabric bat is officially complete!
Now the fun part begins — deciding how to show off your spooky little creations. String a few together for a festive garland across your mantel, hang them in windows for a soft fluttering effect, or scatter them on shelves and tables as playful Halloween accents. You can even scale the pattern up or down to make a whole family of bats in different sizes and fabrics! Projects like this are what make sewing so rewarding — quick, creative, and full of personality. And with the NECCHI NC-59QD Computerized Sewing Machine, every detail feels effortless.
